Today the Jupiter Sandbar is proud to bring you our Dune Dog Cafe review.
Working in Jupiter, Florida, we here at the Jupiter Sandbar have heard of Dune Dog Cafe on several occasions. Our hesitation for taking a trip down the street and eating at this little diner off A1A is quite simple; it’s always packed! Today we finally decided to take the plunge and head on over to one of Jupiter’s staples – looking back I am disappointed in myself for not trying it sooner.
The overall atmosphere of Dune Dog Cafe is laid back and casual with island flare all around. Despite being adjacent to bustling street of Alternate A1A, eating at Dune Dog’s makes you feel like you are sitting in a beachfront shack with absolutely no care in the world.
The staff is extremely friendly and despite the restaurant being slammed, we were immediately taken to a picnic bench style table in the back. Our drinks were almost instantly brought out to us upon our order and we went right into placing our meal order. Does this legendary Jupiter staple live up to all of the hype? Let’s take a look at how much our meals cost and just how good they tasted:
Yankee Nachos – $5.50 – Appetizer
Jupiter Sandbar Review: Today the Jupiter Sandbar decided to try out an appetizer because we simply couldn’t resist this dish once we saw it on the menu. Dune Dog Cafe takes a rather interesting spin on nachos as they use waffle fries instead of tortilla chips – WAFFLE FRIES! The waiter brought out the Yankee Nachos and sitting on a bed of waffle fries was chili, cheese, tomatoes, onions, scallions and jalapeno peppers. Let’s just say that the nachos were gone faster than you could say “Dune Dog!”
Leroy Brown’s Junkyard Dog (2) – $3.90 each (regular)
Tim’s Meal Review: After hearing that Dune Dog Cafe had the “Best Hot Dog in Palm Beach” my choice for lunch was clear – two chili cheese dogs! I ordered two of the Junkyard Dogs which were loaded with chili, pushcart sauce, cheese and diced onions – they are not shy with the toppings. I had never heard of pushcart sauce but upon further investigation it is a concoction that consists of oil, onions, ketchup, cinnamon, chili powder, salt and pepper. Regardless of what it is exactly, it was absolutely delicious. Dune Dog definitely lives up the the whole “Best Hot Dog” hype and should win the award for messiest as well – I had to use a fork and a knife to eat my junkyard dogs which is unheard of.
Bourbon Street Shrimp – $12.25 – Served with Two Sides
Devon’s Meal Review: Today I decided to go healthy so I ordered the Bourbon Shrimp. It comes either grilled or blackened– I got mine grilled– and I ordered grilled veggies and slaw as my sides. Let me just say that I cannot resist a grilled vegetable and these were absolutely fantastic. Lots of zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, onions and red peppers. The shrimp was also delicious, and with 15 of them, I had plenty. I was actually surprised that Dune Dog offered something like this and that they were able to do it so well. I always thought it was just a place to go for hotdogs and fried seafood. I’m very rarely wrong, but I’m glad I was this time.
Sea Dogs (2) – $6.35
Dave’s Meal Review: I had the Sea Dogs? I think that’s what they were, basically it was fish hot dogs, but fish hotdogs just sounds disgusting so I can see why they went with a better name. These things were pretty damn good, think of a piece of fried fish slapped on a bun with some lettuce, tomato, and tartar on the side. They have epic buns here too, they are toasted giving them a little crusty kick. On a side note has anyone tried the Florida beer they promote at Dune Dog’s? *Editor’s Note – Dave can’t properly use his iPhone so his Sea Dogs picture is non-existent.*
In conclusion, Dune Dog Cafe definitely lives up to the hype that Jupiter, Florida locals preach. My hot dogs were great as was the other food that the Jupiter Sandbar ordered – you have to try to Waffle Fry nachos (Yankee Nachos), they are to die for! Being that this place is so popular you can expect to wait a little bit to get a table but it is well worth it – I’d definitely recommend that you bring your friends and family to the Dune Dog Cafe in Jupiter, Florida, you will not be disappointed.
